Tom Phillips was born in 1937 and discovered his love of art while attending drawing classes and lectures on Renaissance iconography while studying at Oxford. His first one-man exhibi-tion took place in London in 1965, four years later we won a John Moore’s prize. Phillips also taught at art schools across the UK where he taught Britain’s newest and most promising artists including Brian Eno. Throughout his career, Phillips has received many commissions. These include tapestries, sculptures and street mosaics for his native Peckham, and ornament and memorials for Westminster Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. Phillips was elected to the Royal Academy in 1984 and served as chair for the Academy’s library and exhibition committee from 1995 to 2007. In 2002, Phillips received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours for his services to Art.
